Taking up his cross

“It is not that I want merely to be called a Christian, but actually to be one. Yes, If I prove to be one, then I can have the name…Come fire, cross, battling with wild beasts, wrenching of bones, mangling of limbs, crushing of my whole, cruel tortures of the devil-only let me get to Jesus Christ! -Ignatius, Epistle to the Romans, 3,5,6. In response to being condemned to death for his faith, ca. AD 110.

“And He was saying to them all, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?'” –Luke 9:23-25
